  • In January 2006, the original tower closed due to structural issues. In the fall of 2007, a student-led task force initiated a project to restore the Tower. Andrew Burman ‘09, Will Counts ‘09, and Rebecca Mitchell ’08 spearheaded the project.
  • "Very few buildings ever echo and hold such rich history, profound stories and personal memories as the Thunderbird Tower. It is an architectural legacy to be honored." — Steven Brenden
  • The Tower is at the heart of the Thunderbird campus and its past is integral to Thunderbird’s original “global perspective.” It was built in 1941 and served as the Air Control Tower and Officers’ quarters during the operation of the Thunderbird 1 Army Air Field, where American, British, Canadian and Chinese pilots trained during WWII.
  • The graduate school was built on the site of Thunderbird Field, a historic airbase established to train American, Canadian, British and Chinese pilots during World War II. The remnants of that earlier time can still be seen on the modern campus in a number of landmark buildings, including the airfield control tower, barracks and airplane hangars.http://www.youtube.com/embed/mmBd0Bb00UI?rel=0&wmode=transparent
